SERVICES - SUPPORTED LIVING

With a focus on independence, integration into everyday community life, and a supportive structure, EduCare of Texas offers services tailored to the specific needs of children and adults with special needs. In the case of the Home and Community-based Services (HCS) waiver, services are offered to one, two or three adults or children living in a home or an apartment. In the case of Intermediate Care Facilities for Mental Retardation (ICF-MR) programs, services are offered to adults or children in homes supporting four to six individuals. Individuals may need only a few hours of support a week or they may require services 24-hours a day.

These small, community-based residences are usually located in quiet residential neighborhoods close to a full range of community activities and services. Managed by local residential coordinators, staffed around the clock by trained residential support staff, supported by licensed nurses and experienced Qualified Mental Retardation Professionals/Case Managers and backed-up by consultant therapists, the programs offer individuals the opportunity to enhance the skills needed to achieve maximum independence.

These homes have a strong emphasis on gaining and applying new functional skills, such as self-administration of medications, cooking, and doing laundry and other household tasks. The focus is on maintaining previously acquired skills and addressing quality of life concerns. On nights and weekends, residents take full advantage of social, recreational, and spiritual resources in the community. Utilization of public transportation is generally available for individuals who are ready to handle this aspect of community integration.

During the day, individuals generally attend various workshops/day programs of their choice, located in their area. EduCare of Texas also provides extensive pre-vocational, vocational, supportive employment, and day activity services through Alternative Business Services, where work is more than a job and customers can change a life®. With over 24 locations throughout the state, there are Alternative Business Services close to many of our group home locations.
